About this game

Dots and Boxes is the pencil and paper game you probably played on the back of a notebook, now on your phone and fully offline. Take turns drawing a line between two dots. Close the fourth side of a box and it's yours, and you draw again. Whoever owns more boxes when the last line goes in wins.

PLAY THE COMPUTER
There are three levels. Easy grabs a box now and then and plays loose, so it's a good place to learn.

Medium always takes what you give it and won't hand you a box while it has a safe line left. Hard counts chains and loops near the end of the game, and it knows when to leave you two boxes so it can keep control. It plays by the same rules and the same lines as you, nothing hidden. It can be beaten, but you'll have to think about chains.

THREE BOARD SIZES
Pick 3x3, 4x4 or 5x5 boxes. A 3x3 game takes about a minute. On 5x5 the endgame gets long and the chain counting really matters. You also choose who starts, you or the computer.

TWO PLAYERS ON ONE PHONE
Hand the phone back and forth. Player 1 plays circles, Player 2 plays squares, and each side has its own colour, so you can always tell whose box is whose.

MADE FOR FINGERS
Tap anywhere close to a line. The line lights up while you press and gets drawn when you let go, so a slip doesn't cost you a box. When the computer closes several boxes in a row, you see each line one at a time instead of a sudden jump.

THE SMALL THINGS
• Undo takes back your last line and the computer's reply
• Restart asks first, so you don't lose a game by accident
• Your game is saved after every line. Close the app and carry on later
• Stats for each level and size: wins, best winning streak and boxes taken
• A short rules page with a tip about chains
• Midnight and Day themes, or follow your phone's dark mode
• Sound, vibration and reduced motion switches

NO ACCOUNT, NO INTERNET NEEDED
You don't sign in and you don't need a connection to play. Your stats stay on your phone.

About ads: the game is free to download and supported by ads. A small banner sits at the bottom of the screen, away from the board. Your first three games never show a full screen ad. After that, one may show when you tap Rematch or Home after a finished game, at most once every three games and never during a game. A one time purchase removes all ads, and you can restore it on a new phone.

Draw your first line and see who blinks first.
Draw lines, close boxes and outplay the computer on Easy, Medium or Hard.

What’s new

Better TalkBack support. Every line and box on the board can now be found and read out on its own, like "Horizontal line, row 2, between dots 3 and 4, not drawn". Double tap a free line to draw it. After each move you hear which line was drawn and who took a box, so you can follow the computer too. Playing by touch works just like before.
