Matura is a game for learning English vocabulary for the basic Matura exam.
A cannon stands in the center of the board. Monsters approach from either side, each with an English word above their heads. You enter the Polish translation, and the cannon rotates and fires.
A monster that reaches the cannon takes a life. Once all lives are lost, the game ends.
HOW IT DIFFERS FROM FLASHCARDS
Flashcards allow you to trick yourself: you look at the answer and assume you knew it. Here, you have to write the word from memory before the monster reaches the cannon.
You either know it or you don't.
WHAT'S INSIDE
- 102 sets, 2084 entries—the full range of topics for the basic secondary school leaving exam
- 14 sections: People, Place of Residence, Education, Work, Private Life, Nutrition, Shopping, Travel, Culture, Sports, Health, Science and Technology, Nature,
Social Life
- Each set has approximately 20 entries, so that one game shows each word several times—repeating happens automatically
- Custom sets: you add entries in the editor, organized like in Quizlet
- Separate multiple correct translations with a comma—each is scored
HOW THE DIFFICULTY INCREASES
- A new level every 8 kills: monsters move faster and appear more frequently
- From level 2, crates with more powerful ammunition drop; you collect them by entering the word
- From level 3, some monsters wear armor—you must enter the translation twice
- A series of unmistakable hits grants a point multiplier up to x5
- 8 achievements and a local leaderboard for the best runs
SETTINGS
Number of lives from 1 to 5, three background themes, sound, interface language: Polish or English, and translation direction: English to Polish, Polish to English, or random. The "Polish to English" mode is significantly more difficult because it requires reproducing a foreign word from memory rather than recognizing it—and it's this mode that develops active vocabulary.
POLISH CHARACTERS ARE OPTIONAL
The game's keyboard only has the letters A-Z, and matching answers ignores tails and case. Typing "zrekny" counts the same as "zrekny," so you don't waste time switching keyboards.
NO INTERNET, NO ADVERTISING, NO ACCOUNT
The app doesn't have internet access, so it can't send anything. There are no ads, analytics, or logging in. All progress stays on your phone and disappears with the app. It works on airplanes and in basements.
