About this app

SpeakThat! is a free and open-source Android app that reads your incoming notifications out loud using text-to-speech. Unlike alternatives, SpeakThat gives you COMPLETE control over what gets read and what doesn't.

Why SpeakThat!?

- Open-Source (With the source code available on GitHub, you can verify SpeakThat’s privacy claims and contribute towards it)

- 100% Free (SpeakThat is free for everyone. And when I say free - I mean free. No subscriptions, no ads, no purchases of any kind)

- Entirely Local (All processing happens on your device. No external servers, no data harvesting, and no AI)

- Private Mode (Set individual notifications to Private Mode. This means their app name will be read out, but their notification content won’t)

- App Filtering (Decide exactly which apps get read out and which will always remain silent via the Whitelist/Blacklist)

- Word Filter (Blacklist certain words to prevent notifications containing them from being read out, or swap words entirely)

- Content Cap (Limit readouts to a word count, sentence count, or time limit. Great for obnoxiously long notifications like emails)

- URL Handling (Announce web links either in full, their domain name only, or replace all web links with your own custom text)

- Custom App Names (If an app name sounds unnatural in speech, swap it with a replacement for readouts... I will not mention any names!)

- Voice Options (Full control over pitch, speed, TTS language and audio stream for maximum flexibility)

- Shake to Stop (Cancel a readout by shaking your device. The sensitivity can be adjusted to suit your needs)

- Wave to Stop (Cover your device’s proximity sensor to cancel ongoing readouts. This is perfect for desk environments)

- Delay Before Readout (Give your notification tone some breathing room by adding a small delay before SpeakThat begins talking)

- Notifications (Optionally display a persistent notification indicating when SpeakThat is active or just when it’s speaking)

- Smart Logic (Conditional Rules allow you even finer control, such as specific behaviour when Bluetooth is connected)

- Automation Apps (SpeakThat works with automation apps like Tasker or MacroDroid, and provides shortcuts for easy setup)

- Save/Load Settings (Tweaked SpeakThat perfectly but now you’re switching phones? Save your settings and load them on your new device)

- Speech Formatting (Customise how the readouts are structured. Write your own sentence with placeholders for the app name and content)

- TTS Engines (Use external text-to-speech engines if Android’s default one isn’t doing it for you. This gives you control over the voice used)

- Language Support (Crowd-sourced translations are constantly being added. Feel free to help translate SpeakThat into your language)

- Diagnostics (With so much customisation, things can sometimes break. That’s why SpeakThat features built-in diagnostics tools)

- Support (Need help? Don’t we all. An unpaid guy in his bedroom is responsive to emails and willing to help you. Hint: It’s me...)

- Modern Design (Using the Material design system, SpeakThat has an intuitive design for its user interface. Customising is easy)

SpeakThat does not send your data anywhere unless you submit a bug report (and even then it's optional!) The app operates *entirely* on your device - no cloud processing, no data collection, no external servers. What happens on your phone, stays on your phone.

Accessibility Service
SpeakThat can be granted the Accessibility service for increased reliability and some extra features enabling more ways to interact with ongoing readouts. This is entirely opt-in and not required for the app to function. It is a convenience feature for those who need it.

Perfect for accessibility, drivers & commuters, athletes & fitness enthusiasts busy professionals, parents and caregivers, and anyone who wants a smarter relationship with their phone.
The world's most comprehensive notification reader.

I've been looking for an ad-free notifier for Android and found Speak That!, finally...and it's exactly what I need. Try it and if you love it, donate to the developer so he can afford to keep ads off the app. The only things that would make it perfect? (1)Announce phone calls, e. g. "Call from {contact}" (2)When receiving a text from a person in my contacts list, if it could pull the contact's name from the list, e.g. "Text from {contact}"

Thank you! I hear you- other people want this too and I would LOVE to add it. Unfortunately that would require VERY invasive permissions and means SpeakThat would replace any spam prevention app you have. I'm only one person, and can't maintain that at this time. So it's best done by an external app so as to not dilute SpeakThat's focus. I'm sorry!

I have only used (Speak That) for one day, I am still trying to fully understand the setting and how to configure the app the way I would like to have it interact with my notifications. So far I really do like what I am seeing, I like I can limit what is read, how much is read and what notifications are read and not, I am still trying to see how to stop the notifications I don't want read. Great No Ads! You should charge a reasonable one time fee. Just Joe

I'm working on some documentation that should explain every setting. As you might expect though, it is taking a while to write! If you need any help setting up, please don't hesitate to send me an email at micoycbusiness@gmail.com! ~Mitchi

Finally an app that reads my texts and it turns on and off when my earbuds are connected. It's a little tricky to set up but lots of options and it has worked great for me on my Pixel 10a. Does not seem to drain my battery. I would highly recommend this app. I'm very happy that it is ad free also.

Thank you! That put a smile on my face! With there being so many options, I found it very difficult to keep it user-friendly. And I'm still working on that. If you have any feedback or would be willing to tell me the parts you struggled with, please send them to me at micoycbusiness@gmail.com! ~Mitchi
