Mikrohistorie helps you work on spoken Norwegian through short stories, writing, repetition, and dialect comparison.
Mikrohistorie is a Norwegian language course that teaches you to understand dialects. Each lesson is a short story written and read by real Norwegians. It is the first app that teaches pronunciation in your chosen dialect.
WHY DIALECTS MATTER
In Norway there is no single spoken standard that everyone uses. Each region has its own dialect. For many Norwegians it is an important part of their national identity.
If you are starting to learn Norwegian, encountering dialects can be frustrating.
The answer is regular exposure to different dialects. It is about consistent contact with real spoken Norwegian. Over time the differences start to sound familiar, and you can feel more confident in everyday conversations.
HOW IT WORKS
First you listen. Then you write down what you hear. Then you repeat. And at the end you can compare the same text in different dialects.
1. Listen
Listen to a short story read by a Norwegian speaking in their own dialect.
2. Write
Write down what you hear, phrase by phrase.
3. Repeat
Listen closely to each phrase and repeat it out loud.
4. Compare dialects
Listen to the same story in a different dialect.
It is not about rushing
The exercises are there to help you stay with the language a little longer, notice more, and build familiarity with spoken Norwegian over time.
WHO IS IT FOR
It works best for learners who already know some Norwegian and want more help with spoken language. If you can read a simple text but still struggle when people speak, that is exactly the gap the app is meant to work on.
WHICH DIALECTS ARE INCLUDED
All stories are available in østnorsk (the Oslo region). Additionally in bergensk, nordnorsk, and sørlandsk. We are adding more dialects depending on interest.
STORIES
Crime, documentary or inspired by real events, science fiction, and light family stories.
New stories added every month.
