Rubik's AlphaOctal is a cryptosystem based on Leonardo da Vinci's designs for a mechanical device with rotatable pieces capable of rotating on all three spatial axes. It is widely accepted that both the Nichols Cube puzzle and the Rubik's Cube were based on da Vinci's designs.
More than four centuries later, the first cryptosystems based on 32-symbol alphabets were described. These used the movements of the mechanism devised by da Vinci to encrypt a message. It was proposed as an alternative to the ADFGVX cipher during World War I, as RubikA8# increased the cryptogram length in a less dramatic way than the ADFGVX cipher.
