About this app

Introduction 👋

This app was created to answer one question: is this phone actually fine? PAST checks the display, the touch screen, the hardware and the sensors one at a time, remembers every answer, and turns the whole thing into a report you can keep or hand to somebody else.
It started years ago as a dead pixel tester and has been rebuilt from nothing: Jetpack Compose, Material3 Expressive, dynamic colors, light/dark/Amoled themes and a lot of animations. Support and updates are guaranteed!

Why should I use PAST? 🤔

Well, I'll tell you 3 main reasons:

• A phone that looks perfect can hide a dead speaker, a tired battery, a replaced screen or a camera that never focuses. Ten minutes and you know!


• Nothing ever leaves your phone: no account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking of any kind!


• It admits when it cannot be sure, instead of guessing. A phone nobody tested scores zero, never one hundred!

Buying second hand, selling your old one, or just wondering whether that rattle is normal: it is the same set of checks either way, and the report is what turns "trust me" into something you can look at.

Tests 🔍

34 checks, and the app lists only the ones YOUR phone can answer: no barometer, no barometer test.

• Display: full screen colors, defect map, burn in, gradient banding, backlight bleed, viewing angle, measured refresh rate and motion clarity


• Touch: multitouch, dead zones and the real digitizer sampling rate


• Hardware: vibration, buttons, battery, loudspeaker, earpiece, microphone, every camera lens on its own, torch, fingerprint, NFC, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, mobile network, GPS and infrared


• Sensors: accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity, light, compass, barometer, step counter and hinge angle

The phone tests itself ⚡

Twelve of those checks need nobody watching, because the phone owns both the stimulus and the instrument: it plays a tone and listens for it, lights the torch and looks at it with the camera next to it, runs the motor and feels it with the accelerometer, weighs gravity, writes to the storage and reads it back to see if it came home unchanged. Where it cannot be certain it says so, rather than accusing a phone that works perfectly.

The report 📄

Every verdict feeds one health score, counted against everything your phone can be asked rather than against whatever you ran. The defect map remembers exactly where the bad pixels are, in coordinates that survive a rotation. The whole report exports as an image you can send to a buyer.

30 of the 34 tests, the defect map, the score and the report screen are free forever. One single payment, never a subscription, unlocks the automatic self check, the measuring tools, four deeper tests and the shareable report image.


Please note: PAST needs an unusual number of permissions for an app this private, and the reason is simply what it does, since you cannot test a microphone without opening the microphone. Every one of them is asked for when you start the test that needs it, never at launch, and the privacy policy lists them one by one. The speed test is the only thing in the whole app that touches the internet.
