MixGym is ear training for people who mix and master music.
Knowing what a 3 kHz boost sounds like, or hearing 1 dB of gain difference, is a skill you build by practising — not by reading about it. MixGym turns that practice into short, focused sessions you can do in ten minutes a day.
WHAT YOU TRAIN
• Frequency — identify boosts and cuts across six bands, from sub to air
• EQ matching — dial in the curve you hear
• Gain — hear differences down to a fraction of a decibel
• Pan and stereo width — place and judge the image
• Compression — recognise ratio, threshold and attack
• Saturation — spot harmonic distortion as it is added
• Reverb — match decay, size and mix, and detect the moment it becomes audible
TEN SKILL GAMES
Match, dial and drag challenges, ABX listening tests, threshold detection that finds your personal limit, and a three-alternative triangle test that catches lucky guesses.
BUILT AROUND HOW HEARING IMPROVES
• Daily workouts that pick your weakest areas automatically
• Difficulty that follows your skill rating rather than a fixed ladder
• Spaced review, so a skill you nailed last week comes back before you lose it
• Streaks, progress charts and leaderboards to keep you honest
REAL AUDIO, NOT TEST TONES
Training on sine waves teaches you to hear sine waves. MixGym uses real recorded material — drums, bass, guitar, ukulele, vocals and full loops — processed live by a native audio engine. Levels are matched automatically, so you judge the difference you are meant to hear rather than picking whichever version is louder.
200 samples are built into the app, so you can train on a plane with no signal. More stream on demand.
USE HEADPHONES
Ear training rewards a consistent listening setup. Any decent pair of headphones works; the same pair every session works better
