The Catechism of the Catholic Church (in Latin Catechismus Catholicæ Ecclesiæ, represented as "CCE" in the bibliographic citations), or universal catechism, whose official version was published in Latin in 1997 contains the exposition of the faith, doctrine and morals of the Church Catholic, attested or illuminated by Sacred Scripture, Apostolic Tradition and the ecclesiastical Magisterium. It is one of the two catechisms of the universal Church that have been written in all of history, which is why it is considered the most reliable source on basic doctrinal aspects of the Catholic Church. The drafting of this catechism, together with the drafting of the new Code of Canon Law, the Code of Law of the Eastern Catholic Churches and the Compendium of Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church represent some of the most important documents resulting from the renovation begun in the Vatican Council II and that have become reference texts on the Catholic Church and transcendental documents for the history of the contemporary Church. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a document that can be freely consulted, cited and studied by all members of the Catholic Church to increase knowledge regarding the fundamental aspects of the faith. In the same way it is the official reference text for the writing of Catholic catechisms throughout the world.
