Moon Writer is a minimalist and functional text editor with Markdown support.

This app makes it easy to write articles, books, journals, and take notes.

Organize your documents into folders to stay organized.

Auto-naming helps you take quick notes, while detailed file names, including the date, time, and year, help you return to editing a document later without searching.

The editor and preview modes individually remember where you finished reading and editing a document.

The main rule of this app is to prevent data loss. After each character entered, the editor saves the text file.

Moon Writer supports automatic scheduled backups to Google Drive.

Ratings and reviews

I have been using this app since 2019, so for seven years now, and it's been lovely and wonderful and free. All of a sudden, after the latest update, it's told me that my "trial period" has run out, and that unless I purchase a license, I can no longer create or edit any files. What? This is extremely frustrating, and there was no indication whatsoever before the update that it would be changing like this. At least the files were stored locally as .txt files. Very disappointed.

I write daily using Google Docs/Drive but wanted to explore apps that can create files on the phone. Moon Writer does that. It allows share/save to a folder on my phone or upload to Drive for editing with Docs. The app has a selection of fonts and they can be resized. The formatting options like italics, bold, and underline don't show as such in the document, and that's so far the only real "ding" that reduced the rating to 4 stars. No ads is a ★HUGE★ plus. So far so good, thank you!

Have renewed respect for this as it's a text editor rather than just a notepad although save location restricted to internal. Too few fonts, backup is confusing, and no spellchecker but bought key (no longer offered) anyway to encourage development since .rtf editors are few. Developer slow in responding if at all so appears abandoned.
