I came into using this app with 0 Japanese proficiency. It's essentially a great flashcards+ tool, it runs fine and there's basically no ads. I paid the ~$5 for the extra features which were mostly superfluous. What I wanted the most out of it after learning the basics was learning words. The words available to learn are very few and seem to run an agenda? It had me learn the words "Islam", "Jesus Christ", and "Sophora Flavescens", to name a few weird ones. My teacher introduced me to Kanapro web back in university, and I've never been able to find anything quite like it. I'm happy to see it has become an app now. It was always so great due to the smooth interface with no advertising and ability to use offline. I'm very happy to have come across it all those years back. I decided to purchase a lifetime licence now, for a measly £4. Love to support developers like this, the app is done for clearly more than financial gain.

My favourite app for learning kana. This, like other similar apps, will let you practice by answering multiple-choice questions; however, I find that the better way of learning is by using this app's "Stage 4" mode, where you are given a sign to type out in romaji. The free version has 4 "stages" (modes of learning) and the paid version adds 5 onto that. Premium is a small one-time payment, and while the paid version is worth the investment, the free app works well as is.
