About this app

Fish identifier for anglers and aquarium keepers. Photograph a fish to identify the species, whether it is safe to handle and what it needs in a tank.

IDENTIFY ANY FISH
This fish identifier reads body shape, fin placement and markings to name the species. It covers freshwater sport fish, coarse fish, inshore marine species, reef fish, sharks and rays, and tropical aquarium fish.

HANDLING HAZARDS
A meaningful number of fish are venomous, and it is usually the spines rather than the teeth. Lionfish, scorpionfish, weever fish, catfish and stingrays all deliver venom through spines, and most stings happen while unhooking.

FOR AQUARIUM KEEPERS
Ornamental fish are frequently sold under trade names that obscure what they are, and adult size is what causes problems. A common pleco sold at eight centimetres reaches forty-five.

PHOTOGRAPH SIDE-ON
Fin placement and body shape carry the identification. Colour is the least reliable feature and fades quickly after a fish is landed.

Check your local rules before keeping anything — size limits and seasons vary by water.
