About this app

Khaya is the first translation app for Ghanaian languages relying on Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. It has expanded to other African languages, such as Yoruba.

It also now includes Automatic Speech Recognition capabilities for Twi, Yoruba, Ga and Dagbani - speak directly to your phone and the app will transcribe your speech into text! For these languages, to the best of our knowledge, it is the first and only app to date offering such general speech recognition capabilities!

Please be sure to watch the 1min instruction video above to understand how to use the app! Please also note that the Dagbani ASR is presently best suited for single words only. Finally, please understand that noise in your environment and quality of your mic can all affect transcription quality.

If you find the app useful and would like to see it grow and improve, kindly purchase an ad-free subscription to support our research. Thank you for your support!

The underlying algorithms are various neural network architectures, built by Algorine Research on top of open source technology developed by Ghana NLP.

If you encounter service outages, please report them using our developer website, or any of our social media handles!

FEATURES:
------------------------------------------
1. Speak to the app in full Twi, Yoruba and Ga sentences and it will transcribe it into text!
2. Speak single Dagbani words to the app and it will transcribe it into text!
3. Translate text from English to Twi, Ewe, Ga, Yoruba and Dagbani
4. Translate text from Twi, Ewe, Ga, Yoruba or Dagbani to English
5. Submit improved translation corrections and recommendations directly from the app, and watch the technology improve to serve the Global African community

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
------------------------------------------
The app was built for Android 12. Some users with Android 7+ have reported a good experience. Version 1.0.1 received positive feedback from some Android 5 & 6 users. The older the version of Android is, the more likely you are to experience problems, especially with the latest audio-enabled features. Please report any such issues and we will do what we can to optimize for these situations, thank you!

A much appreciated and needed app. Me da mo ase! May i make suggestions for the apps future development (based on my user experience): a means to save past translations for quick retrieval in fast moving conversations. Also, where written and spoken twi differ; perhaps an underscoring of the letters ommitted when the word is spoken. I truly look forward any future developments in this app. Thank you!

I think the app is a good one but there are no pronunciations for the translations that's why I can't give a 5 star. Because for someone like me who does understand a language like twi and want to learn, how would I know the right pronunciations I can't read translations, talkless of conversing in it with someone. That's just the only problem after that is solved I will give a 5star😊

Really great app. Simple to use and can help both locals and foreigners to communicate easily. Remember to ALWAYS submit a "feedback translation" when you can to help the algorithm learn!
