About this app

Notestrainer generates an endless supply of sight-reading exercises at your level. No booklet you know by heart after three weeks: every exercise is new.

Pick a level from 1 to 6 — from whole and quarter notes in a small range to syncopation, eighth rests and dotted eighths. Then set up exactly what you want to practise:

• Treble or bass clef
• Keys from C to A flat, major and minor
• Time signatures 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 6/8
• Length of 4, 8, 12 or 16 bars
• Tempo from 40 to 180, with or without a metronome

Play the exercise back to hear how it should sound. The cursor follows the music and the piano keyboard at the bottom lights up on every sounding note, so you see and hear which key belongs to it. Choose the timbre that matches your instrument: piano, guitar, organ or recorder.

The app works completely offline. No account, no ads, no subscription — and nothing about you is collected or sent anywhere.
