Note Universe teaches you to read sheet music by having you play it. Real notation appears on screen, you play it on your MIDI keyboard, and every note you play is checked against the page — one small step at a time, from a single note around middle C to seventh chords with both hands.
No prior experience is needed. Short theory lessons teach everything you need to read the music: finding your way around the keyboard, reading the staff, note names and durations, sharps and flats, key signatures, and on to intervals, chords and rhythm. Each lesson is paired with the exercises that practise it.
The music is generated for you, not drawn from a fixed library. Every exercise is new, so there is nothing to memorise and the supply of music to read never runs out. The only way through is to read it.
HOW IT WORKS
• Real sheet music. Treble, bass and grand staff, ledger lines, key signatures, accidentals, ties, beams and octave (8va) markings, drawn to the same rules as published sheet music.
• Feedback on every note and every beat. Each note is marked as you play it. With the metronome on, your timing is scored as well as your pitch, including whether you tend to rush or drag.
• A skill tree with a clear path. Individual notes first, then melodic and harmonic intervals, triads, inversions, seventh chords, rhythm and hands-together playing. Each skill unlocks the next.
• Theory tied to the keys. The lessons run alongside the exercises as a second tree, and a new topic's lesson is recommended before its first exercise.
• Freestyle workouts. A mixed session built from the topics you have been practising, weighted towards whatever needs the most work.
• Progress you can see. XP and a Bronze, Silver or Gold rank on every exercise, Consistency Points for a five-minute daily goal, and your reading speed in notes per minute and accuracy for each note name charted over time.
WHO IT'S FOR
• Complete beginners who have never read a note of music.
• Returning players who can find the notes but read too slowly to enjoy playing.
• Self-taught musicians and producers who want notation to stop feeling foreign.
• Students who want structured reading practice between lessons.
You choose your starting level during setup, and optional practice reminders help you keep a daily habit.
MIDI KEYBOARDS
Note Universe is built to be played on a MIDI keyboard. Bluetooth (BLE MIDI) and USB MIDI keyboards, digital pianos and controllers are supported, and a short calibration step matches exercises to your keyboard's range. Without a keyboard, every theory lesson and the single-note reading exercises can be played on the on-screen keyboard.
PRIVACY
No account, no sign-up, no ads, no in-app purchases. Your progress stays on your device. Anonymous usage analytics and crash reporting are opt-in: you choose during setup and can change your mind at any time in Settings.
Sight-reading practice on your own MIDI keyboard. New sheet music every time.
