PenguinApp is a simple, fast mobile app for exploring penguin colony locations and population counts across Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

Built in collaboration with Oceanites, PenguinApp makes decades of scientific monitoring data easy to browse on your phone.

Data you can trust

All data comes from long-term monitoring programs led by Oceanites and the Mapping Application for Penguin Populations and Projected Dynamics (MAPPPD). This includes decades of field surveys, satellite analysis, and scientific validation.

PenguinApp uses this data locally on your device — no account, no tracking, no data collection.

What’s new

This new release has a reorganization of the main page with new functionality now to view all penguin colonies on a map, compute distance and bearing to sites, and to identify the top 10 nearest colonies.

Support links for Oceanites have now been moved to a button, limiting the push to external web browsers.

This new version now feels more app-like and allows users to more easily navigate information about the location of penguin colonies and numbers of birds found at each site.
