Hapax is a word of the day app, a vocabulary widget, and a daily dictionary entry, for people who like words. Every morning it puts a new word, its definition, its pronunciation and a real example sentence somewhere you will actually see it, before you have opened anything.

Free, and free means free. No ads. No account. No subscription. No notifications. No tracking. The Data safety section says no data collected because there is nothing to collect. The whole app works offline. There is no server to talk to.

THE WIDGET IS THE POINT

Most vocabulary apps want you to open them. This one does not. The home screen widget shows the whole entry, the word, its definition and an example sentence, not just a headline you have to tap. You learn a word in the two seconds you were already spending looking at your phone, and then you get on with your day.

WHAT YOU GET

Every definition here was written by a person, not scraped from a dictionary dump and left to read like one. Every example sentence puts the word in a situation you can picture, because a definition tells you what a word means and a sentence tells you when to use it. That is the difference between recognising a word and owning it.
