About this app

Learn Japanese kanji for the JLPT — free, open, offline, and made to be used every day.

OpenKanji teaches the kanji and vocabulary for JLPT N5, N4, N3, N2 and N1: learn
new characters, review them on a schedule that beats forgetting, write them by
hand, and look anything up in a full offline kanji dictionary. Open it and study —
all five levels are yours from the first launch.

tap a word to break it into kanji; tap a radical for every kanji using it.
• Explore phonetic (声符) series — kanji grouped by a shared sound component
that often hints at the reading.

• They appear only at natural breaks between sessions — lessons, reviews and

Kanji and dictionary data come from the open projects KANJIDIC2, JMdict,
KanjiVG and KRADFILE — all credited in the app. Every example sentence is
written for OpenKanji. Handwriting, text recognition and translation run on
your device via Google ML Kit.
