Pixel Oasis - your own pixel art retreat

Step away from a busy day and fill in colors for a while. Pixel Oasis turns your photos and museum masterpieces into pixel art, then lets you color them one tile at a time until the artwork is yours.

■ The moment your photo becomes pixel art

Pick a photo from your album and it becomes a dot picture in seconds. Tiles of similar color are grouped into clusters first, then each cluster gets its own color, so you get wide connected areas that are pleasant to fill - no lonely single tiles scattered around. A pet, a place you traveled to, a dish you liked becomes your own pixel artwork.

■ 40 masterpieces, tile by tile

Forty public domain works from the Art Institute of Chicago and The Metropolitan Museum of Art - Hokusai, Hiroshige, Monet, Cezanne, Manet, Munch, Mondrian, Toulouse-Lautrec and eleven more. Nineteen artists, every one CC0 and free to use.

While you color, after you finish, and from your gallery, tap "Original" and the uncropped painting appears with the artist, year and collection. You can jump straight to the museum page.

■ Color by number, one finger at a time

Follow the numbers and tap a tile to fill it. Double tap and a whole connected area fills at once, so wide backgrounds never tire your wrist. Pinch to zoom and pan when tiles get small.

■ From five minutes to several days

Six canvas sizes to choose from.

■ Your coloring becomes a video

The process is quietly recorded as you color. Open the timelapse from the finish screen or your gallery and it replays from the first tile to the last, ready to share as a video.

■ Your artwork as wallpaper

Set a finished piece as your home screen, lock screen, or both. You preview it at your screen's proportions first, and nothing changes until you tap Apply.

■ Name it, and compare it with the original

Give your finished artwork a name of your own. For pieces made from your photos, tap the artwork and the original fades in over it, so you can see which part became which tiles.

■ Mistakes are fine

Undo and redo go back up to 50 steps. When only a few tiles of one color are left, those spots sparkle to help you find them. Auto fill finishes the selected color in one tap, a set number of times per artwork.

■ Something for your ears

22 background music tracks play in shuffled order, with a soft sound each time a tile fills. Music and sound effects can be turned off separately.

■ Portrait or landscape

In portrait the palette sits below, in landscape beside the canvas, and on a tablet the canvas gets larger. Tiles left and percent done stay visible at the top.

■ Your photos never leave the device

Photos are not sent to a server. Converting and coloring happen entirely on your device, so the whole app works offline and family pictures are safe to use. Progress saves as you go - close the app suddenly and you continue from the last tile you colored.

■ After you finish

Finished artwork collects in your gallery. Send it framed to a friend, or open it again slowly.

■ If you would rather have no ads

A one time contribution removes the ads, and auto fill becomes much more generous. This app is made by one person, so it goes a long way.
