You cannot buy a firearm in California until you pass the FSC test. Thirty questions at the dealer counter, twenty three right to pass, and you find out how it went standing at the counter with a line behind you.
This app is the practice you do before that.
WHAT THE TEST IS
The Firearm Safety Certificate exam is a written test taken at the dealer and given by a DOJ certified instructor. Thirty questions, true or false and multiple choice, 75 percent to pass, and the certificate is good for five years. You need to be 18 and bring your California driver license or state ID. Miss it and the fee covers a second attempt, but not for another 24 hours, which means driving back another day.
HOW YOU PRACTICE
- Quick Test: 10 questions, for the five minutes you have in a parking lot.
- Mock Exam: 30 questions, the same length as the real one.
- Timed Mock Exam: 30 questions in 30 minutes, 23 to pass. The clock is this app's idea, not the state's. The real test is not timed.
- Topic practice: one topic at a time, up to 20 questions, until it sticks.
- Fix Your Mistakes: every question you get wrong comes back later, and keeps coming back until it stops being a mistake.
- Question of the Day: one question a day, with a streak to keep.
- Handbook: seven chapters you can read straight through if you would rather learn it than drill it.
- Your Progress: results per topic, so you stop revising the parts you already know.
WHAT IS COVERED
- A: Gun Safety Rules
- B: Handling and Operation
- C: Firearms and Children
- D: Storage, Transport and Ownership
- E: California Laws and Buying a Firearm
- F: Range and First Aid, bonus material beyond the official test
THE PART NOBODY WARNS YOU ABOUT
Passing the written test is not the last step. Before the dealer hands the firearm over you have to perform a safe handling demonstration in front of the instructor and sign an affidavit saying you did it. Open the action, check the chamber, keep it pointed somewhere sensible, load and unload. The app walks you through those steps, so you are not learning them at the counter.
WHERE THE QUESTIONS COME FROM
Topics A to E follow the scope of the 2025 California DOJ Firearm Safety Certificate study guide, and answers cite the Penal Code section behind them where there is one, so you can check any answer at the source instead of taking this app's word for it. Topic F is this app's own addition and goes beyond the official test.
OFFLINE AND NO ADS
Everything works offline, so you can revise anywhere. No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking. Nothing you do in the app leaves your phone. Purchases are handled by Google Play.
FREE AND FULL
Free: topics A, B and C at seven questions each, the Quick Test drawn from that pool, the whole handbook, mistake practice, and the question of the day drawn from the entire bank. One purchase opens all 258 questions, topics D, E and F, the Mock Exam, the Timed Mock Exam and the longer safe handling run. One payment, no subscription. You take this test once every five years, so a weekly charge never made sense.
LEGAL
This is study material, not legal advice. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the California Department of Justice or any government agency, and it is not the official test. It does not sell firearms or ammunition and contains no instructions for making them. The official and binding source is the DOJ Firearm Safety Certificate study guide at oag.ca.gov/firearms.
Good luck at the counter.
