Font, font, font! Yes, that's why I only give three stars, although the App is no worse than the NS website: the NS is the only one of several digital publications that I read which use a font that gives the sense of text fading at the top of each character. I suspect it is seen as stylistically appealing, but even if that is so, the text is less comfortable to read. I once cancelled my digital sub because I wasn't enjoying it: at the time I struggled to work out why....

The magazine is great and would be worth five stars if only I could read it. But ever since an upgrade a couple of months ago the app has been shite. Freezing or crashing almost every time I use it. Uninstalling, reinstalling, nothing helps. There's no obvious pattern to when it will freeze. Every so often it even works properly. Avoid until fixed.

As well as the magazine, the New Statesman also publishes digital-only articles and podcasts. BUT you cannot access those through this app - you have to go to your browser (or podcast provider) and log in there. This seems a pretty big design flaw. Why not have all your content in your app? Part of why I went digital was to see everything in the same place but this makes me want to go back to print. On the plus side, NS content is always good and the reading experience is fine on my phone.
