Slant

Every square takes one diagonal - one way or the other. The numbers sit on the dots between squares, not inside them, and each one counts the diagonals that touch it. One dot pulls on four squares at once, so a single number can settle a whole corner. The lines you draw may never close a loop. Two rules, and a board that reads like a drawing.
