Road Bounce – AI-Based Road Anomaly Detection and Monitoring System
Road Bounce is an intelligent road condition monitoring application designed to help identify and visualize road anomalies such as potholes, bumps, uneven road surfaces, and other driving hazards. The system combines Artificial Intelligence, IoT sensors, GPS technology, cloud computing, and mobile application technology to provide a comprehensive solution for road safety monitoring.
The application works as part of the Road Bounce ecosystem, which consists of a Raspberry Pi-based sensing unit installed in a vehicle, motion sensors for vibration detection, GPS modules for location tracking, a cloud database for data storage, and a mobile application for visualization and management.
As a vehicle travels on the road, the sensing unit continuously collects acceleration and vibration data from the MPU6050 sensor. A trained machine learning model analyzes this information in real time to identify road anomalies. When an anomaly is detected, the system records its location using GPS coordinates and securely stores the information in the cloud database. The Road Bounce mobile application then displays this information to users through an intuitive and interactive interface.
How Road Bounce Works
Vehicle-mounted sensors continuously collect vibration and acceleration data.
The Raspberry Pi processes sensor readings and performs anomaly detection using a trained machine learning model.
GPS coordinates are collected whenever a road anomaly is detected.
Detection results are uploaded to Firebase Realtime Database.
The mobile application retrieves and displays anomaly information to users in real time.
Users can view anomaly locations, severity levels, and related details through the application dashboard and map interface
Benefits
RoadBounce contributes to safer transportation by helping identify damaged roads before they become major hazards. The system provides valuable information for drivers, researchers, and transportation authorities interested in understanding road conditions and improving infrastructure maintenance.
Potential benefits include:
• Improved road safety awareness
• Early identification of hazardous road segments
• Data-driven infrastructure planning
• Enhanced driving comfort
• Community-based road condition monitoring
• Support for smart city initiatives
Educational and Research Purpose
RoadBounce was developed as a Final Year Project to explore the integration of Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, mobile development, and intelligent transportation systems. The project demonstrates how emerging technologies can be combined to address real-world road safety challenges.
