SakeYō reads the label and tells you what's in the bottle, and whether you'll like it.
Point the camera at the front label, then the back. You get the brewery, the prefecture, the grade, the rice, the polishing ratio, the acidity, and the temperature it's best at, from cold to atsukan. You also get a number: how well this bottle fits your palate. That number is the point of the app.
YOUR PALATE
Seven questions, about a minute. How sweet you take your coffee. How much body you want in a drink. Fruit or earth. From that we place you on the four axes that describe every sake, and every bottle in the app is scored against you. Rate what you drink and the score sharpens. After about fifty bottles your ratings take over and the quiz fades out.
THE MENU
At a restaurant, photograph the sake list. We read every line, find the bottles we know, and rank them for your palate. When we can't confirm a bottle is the exact one on the list, we say so.
WHAT TO DRINK WITH DINNER
Start with the dish. Nearly fifteen hundred of them, from yakitori and unagi to laksa and a cheese you can't pronounce. We name the style that works, tell you why it works, and write out the sentence to say to the server. Or start with the bottle and we'll tell you what to eat with it. At home, we rank what's already on your shelf against tonight's dinner.
YOUR RECORD
The diary is what you've tasted: rating, notes, a photo, where you were, how warm it was served, what you drank it from. If you've done a WSET course, there's a full Level 3 tasting grid. The cellar is what you own. It reads the bottling date off the back label and works out the drinking window, so a nama doesn't sit in the fridge a year past its best. It tells you when to open things.
JAPAN
Where we eat and drink. Bars, restaurants and sake shops you can walk into, with where to sit, what to order and how to book. A twelve-seat basement counter in Kagurazaka. A bottle shop under Tokyo Station open from seven in the morning. A map of the forty-seven prefectures that fills in as you drink and as you visit.
THE PEOPLE
See what your friends are drinking. Find members whose palate matches yours. Tastings, dinners and festivals on a calendar, and a bottle share in Singapore that's on its thirty-eighth edition. Post that you're out tonight and see who turns up.
THE GAME
Put every bottle on the table in a bag and pass the phone. Grade, sweetness, body, style, pasteurization, region. Someone at the table is going to be worse at this than they thought.
