Santhali Clock Logic :
The Santhali Clock calendar logic is based on a combination of traditional Santhali month concepts, the lunar cycle, and practical synchronization with the Gregorian calendar. For the convenience of this project, the following conditions and logic have been adopted.
The Santhali Year, also referred to as Kherwal Serma, is calculated by adding 3101 to the Gregorian Year. For example, the Gregorian year 2026 corresponds to Kherwal Serma 5127. Each Santhali Year begins with Magh 1, making Magh the first month of the Santhali calendar year.
Certain calendar conditions are maintained throughout the system to preserve the expected relationship between Santhali months and the Gregorian calendar. Sakrat, which falls on 14 January every year, must always occur during the Santhali month of Pus. Similarly, the Santhali month Fagun must contain at least one day from the Gregorian months of February or March, while the Santhali month Sohrai must contain at least one day from the Gregorian month of November.
According to the logic adopted for this project, each Santhali month begins immediately after the end of Amavasya (New Moon). The average duration of one lunar cycle, from one New Moon to the next, is approximately 29.53059 days. Since a normal Santhali year contains 12 lunar months, its approximate duration is 29.53059 × 12 = 354.36708 days, which is around 11 days shorter than a Gregorian solar year.
Because of this difference, following a continuous sequence of exactly 12 lunar months every year would gradually shift the Santhali calendar in relation to the Gregorian calendar. Over many years, this shift could cause Sakrat to fall outside the Pus month, Fagun to no longer contain a day in February or March, or Sohrai to no longer contain a day in November. Therefore, a simple fixed 12-month lunar sequence is not sufficient for maintaining the required long-term alignment.
To solve this problem while continuing to follow the lunar cycle, an adjustment logic has been adopted. Between any two consecutive Santhali New Year dates, from Magh 1 to the next Magh 1, the total number of Amavasya/New Moon occurrences is counted. If there are 12 lunar month starts, the normal sequence of 12 Santhali months continues without any change.
However, if there are 13 Amavasya/New Moon occurrences between two consecutive Santhali New Years, the additional lunar month is handled by dividing the Pus period into two consecutive forms. The first Pus is called ᱢᱟᱨᱟᱝ ᱯᱩᱥ (ᱮᱛᱚᱦᱚᱵ), followed immediately by ᱢᱟᱨᱟᱝ ᱯᱩᱥ (ᱢᱩᱪᱟᱹᱫ). After these two consecutive Pus periods, the normal month sequence continues again from Magh, followed by Fagun, Chait, and the remaining months in their normal order.
This approach avoids the need to introduce a completely new name for an additional or intercalary month. Instead, the existing Pus month is represented in two consecutive forms when a 13-month lunar period occurs. This keeps the calendar logic simple, preserves the existing Santhali month naming system, follows the lunar cycle for month changes, and helps maintain long-term synchronization with the Gregorian calendar.
In summary, the Santhali Clock follows the lunar cycle to determine month changes while using a 13-month adjustment whenever necessary. This logic allows the calendar to continue for many years while maintaining the defined relationship between Pus and Sakrat, Fagun and February/March, and Sohrai and November, without breaking the continuous Santhali month sequence.
