About this app

Tallow turns a grocery barcode into a plain-English answer: what is actually in this food, and does it meet the standards you set?

Point your camera at any packaged food or drink. Tallow reads the label, rates every ingredient, and gives the product a 0-100 score with the math shown line by line.

WHAT YOU SEE AFTER A SCAN
• A 0-100 score with a clear band: Clean (70-100), Okay (41-69), Avoid (0-40)
• "Why this score" — every penalty on its own line, including each ingredient by name
• The full ingredient list, color-coded Good / Caution / Avoid, with a written explanation for each one
• Processing level (NOVA group) and packaging material factored in; certified organic credited
• Nutrition facts, where available

LAB-TESTED CONTAMINANTS
Some products in Tallow have been independently lab-tested for heavy metals, PFAS, and other contaminants that never show up on an ingredient list. Where lab results exist, you'll see them on the product page — confirmed findings, non-detects, and the limit each one is measured against. No ingredient list can tell you that. We test.

YOUR STANDARDS, NOT OURS
The 0-100 score is the same for everyone. What counts as good enough is yours to define. Pick from six standards — artificial ingredients, ultra-processed, seed oils, high sugar, high carbs, risky packaging — and every product gets a thumbs up or thumbs down against your list. One strike and it is a no. Missing data reads "unknown", never a quiet pass.

Kid-Safe Mode applies stricter scoring when you are shopping for children.

RESTAURANT MAP
Open the map to see restaurants near you scored 0-100 by other Tallow users on seed oil use, additives, plastics and how much of the food arrives premade. Filter to rated places, green-only, additive-free or seed-oil-free. Tap a place for its sub-scores, photos and written reviews — or rate it yourself and put it on the map.

YOUR PANTRY, TRACKED
Save the products you buy and the home screen averages them into a single pantry score, with a Clean / Okay / Avoid breakdown and your full scan history.

BADGES AND STREAKS
Build a weekly scanning streak and earn badges as you go — for scanning, for rating restaurants, for filing reports, and more. Your progress is visible on your profile.

MISSING A PRODUCT?
If a barcode is not in Tallow yet, photograph the front of the pack and the ingredients label. That takes about a minute, and we research the product and add it to the catalog.

WHAT IS INCLUDED
Barcode scanning is unlimited and does not cost anything. The ingredient list and per-ingredient explanations, nutrition facts, lab-tested contaminant results, your standards verdict, the pantry score, badges and streaks, and the entire restaurant map are all included.
Tallow Premium unlocks the 0-100 product score and its breakdown, healthier swaps, and product search with category browsing and score filters. Premium is an auto-renewing subscription; the price and any trial terms are shown in the app before you confirm.

HOW THE SCORE WORKS
Every product starts at 100. Ingredients rated as harmful subtract points, weighted more heavily when they appear high on the label. Ultra-processing and risky food-contact packaging subtract more. Certified organic adds the only bonus. Ingredient penalties are capped, and a product with no ingredient list is marked Unrated rather than scored.
