About this app

German for the start of school: The linguistically well-founded, playful language promotion for German as a second language

Are you looking for a comprehensive and systematic program for effective language support for first and second graders?

With this elementary school app you get the tried and tested language support material from German for the school start (DfdS).

The material is suitable for building and consolidating vocabulary, grammatical structures and storytelling skills as well as for developing phonological awareness in children with German as a second and first language.

It enables systematic support in small groups over a period of two years (with 4 support hours per week) and is always based on the communicative needs of the children.

The 21 support units with a total of over 100 building blocks systematically build on one another and their arrangement is based on the sequence of natural language acquisition in children.

With the help of specific instructions, the units structure the support hours beforehand. They also include audio and image files, worksheets, playing cards and posters, making for a varied and stimulating language environment.

Each learning unit supports multiple learning goals (e.g., vocabulary, article usage, storytelling) and employs multiple task types (e.g., conversation, role play, rhyme, song, retelling, card or board games).

The preparation of the content in various modalities (receptive, productive, oral and increasingly in writing) helps the children to intensively repeat and consolidate the language skills that have been promoted.

The concept and the promotional material for German for starting school were developed at the University of Heidelberg in cooperation with the non-profit Elke and Günter Reimann-Dubbers Foundation.

You can find detailed information about this app and the German for school start project on our website (deutsch-fuer-den-schulstart.de).

Notes on the required material

In addition to this app, further material is required for support with German for the start of school. These include two hand puppets (cat and dragon), selected picture books, handicraft materials and printed German for the start of school picture cards. If necessary, the latter can be sent directly from the app to your own e-mail address and then printed out. Alternatively, it is possible to purchase all court cards, playing cards, boards, strips and posters printed on firm paper in the DfdS web shop.

Are you interested in further training on language development or the use of the German material for the start of school? Then you can find out more about our advanced training offers on the Deutsch für den Schulstart homepage.
