About this app

The Second Harvest Food Rescue App connects businesses with surplus food directly to social service organizations who will put it to great use. Food donations from local businesses support community initiatives, such as snacks for children's after-school programs, meals for seniors, food for shelters and drop-in centres, and more. Donating food also helps protect our environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and it keeps healthy food where it belongs: in pantries and on plates, not in landfill. What’s not to love?

WHAT TYPES OF FOOD BUSINESSES CAN DONATE THROUGH THE SECOND HARVEST FOOD RESCUE APP?
You name it! Grocery stores, restaurants, bakeries, coffee houses, caterers, hotels, prepared food producers, distributors, growers… any food business operators who have healthy, surplus can donate it through the Second Harvest Food Rescue App instead of throwing perfectly good food away.

WHAT TYPES OF ORGANIZATIONS CAN RESCUE FOOD WITH THE SECOND HARVEST FOOD RESCUE APP?
Again, you name it! Any registered charity or non-profit organization can register to rescue food, including meal programs, after-school programs, drop-in centres, student nutrition programs, food banks, shelters and community services. Whether you want to use the Second Harvest Food Rescue App once a year, a few times a month or every day, this free program supports those working across communities.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Easy-peasy! Food businesses register for their free account. The business creates a donation by entering details, including types of food available, and when it is available for pickup. Nonprofit organizations apply to be Food Rescuers and are screened to ensure food safety practices are in place. Nonprofits then receive notifications of available donations in their area, they claim the donation they need, then go to the business for pickup.

The app even shows you the environmental impact of your rescued food – and lets you share your impact story on social, right from the app. Sweet!

WHAT KIND OF FOOD CAN FOOD DONORS OFFER FOR RESCUE?
Food Donors can offer perishable dairy, protein, and prepared foods, produce, baked goods, and fresh, frozen, or shelf-stable food products. We take food safety seriously and ask that Food Donors and Recipient Organizations comply with Second Harvest's donation and recovery guidelines.

The Second Harvest website has tons of resources to help you donate, rescue and store surplus food – you even have access to our friendly support team.

IS THERE ANY FOOD THAT CAN’T BE RESCUED?
To ensure everyone’s safety, users of the Second Harvest Food Rescue App cannot rescue:
• Leftover food that has been plated and served, including buffets that are exposed to public touch
• Temperature-sensitive food that's been sitting at room temperature for over 2 hours
• Food or drinks with alcohol and/or medicinal ingredients
• Packaged food that’s been opened or has a broken seal
• Sushi

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT SECOND HARVEST?
We’re glad you asked! Second Harvest is Canada’s largest food rescue organization. Since 1985, we have been working with food businesses to rescue healthy unsold surplus and delivering it with our fleet of trucks to a network of nonprofit organizations in the Greater Toronto Area. But because there is so much food available for recovery all across the country, in 2018 we launched our online food rescue platform so that food businesses and their neighbour nonprofits could connect directly. Today our Food Rescue App is available through the web version or can be downloaded in the app stores.
