Established in 1994, this association is dedicated to promoting the training and certification of emergency medicine specialists. The 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake spurred the enactment of the Emergency Medical Care Act, laying the foundation for pre-hospital care. In 1998, emergency medicine specialists became agency-designated specialties, and a qualification examination began. As of 2025, 2,500 physicians have obtained emergency medicine specialist qualifications.
Emergency medicine specialists actively participate in disaster medicine. During pandemics, emergency physicians demonstrate their professional value and promote responses to emerging infectious diseases. The association continuously plans and promotes courses in resuscitation medicine, pediatric emergency medicine, trauma training, and poisoning treatment to enhance professional capabilities.
Regarding healthcare system reform, in 1999, the association promoted high-quality pre-hospital care; in 2004, it established regional emergency medical response centers to strengthen disaster response capabilities; in 2007, it introduced a medical guidance physician system; in 2010, it established a five-level triage standard to improve the utilization of emergency resources; and in January 2013, it successfully revised the Emergency Medical Care Act.
In terms of international exchange, the association joined the International Federation of Emergency Medicine Societies (IFEM) in 2000, hosted the Asian Conference on Emergency Medicine (ACEM) in 2002 and 2015, and successfully hosted the 23rd International Conference on Emergency Medicine (ICEM2024) in 2025, enhancing the international influence of Taiwan's emergency medicine. In the future, the association will continue to promote the development of emergency medicine and continuously address emerging challenges.
