About this app

LiDAR terrain shading, free, for the United States (USGS 3DEP), plus Canada, England, France, Switzerland, Austria, Czechia, Norway, Wallonia (Belgium), and Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony in Germany. Elsewhere you get the base map, satellite and search, but no LiDAR yet.

You already squint at USGS hillshade in a browser. Shadowmark Maps puts it in your pocket, with offline areas and no account. LiDAR strips away the trees and shows the shape of the ground: cellar holes, old homesites, stone walls, wagon roads, mill races, mounds and Civil War earthworks that are hard to see from the ground or in aerial photos.

It works in every lower-48 state, from the stone walls of New England and Pennsylvania to the earthworks of Virginia and the hollows of the Ozarks. Use it for relic hunting and metal detecting research on private land, for local history, and for hunting scouting.

• Your GPS position on the map, and a compass with a heading-up mode
• Place search that works without a signal: towns and cities worldwide, and coordinates
• A private finds log: photos, notes and position for each find, kept only on your phone, with PDF and CSV export
• One offline area of up to 25 km² (about 3 × 3 miles) with LiDAR and base map, for woods with no signal
• An OpenStreetMap base map, or satellite imagery when you have a signal

SHADOWMARK PRO
• Shade, Detail, Relief, Sky-view and Combined views for the lower 48 states and all of England, computed from USGS 3DEP elevation (1 m where USGS has it, coarser elsewhere) and the Environment Agency's 1 m model. Small banks, foundations and old roadbeds stand out.

• A3 print export of the area around the map center (lower 48 and England)

USE IT RESPONSIBLY
Detect and dig only on private land, with the landowner's permission. National parks and other federal lands have strict rules, and disturbing archaeological sites on federal land is a federal crime (ARPA). Check your state's laws. Protected-site warnings in the app cover England only. LiDAR shows the shape of the ground, not what lies in it.
