Paint a pond with one finger, drop in a family, a flock of sheep and one hungry wolf, and watch a tiny pixel world get on with its life. Sheep graze, wolves hunt, hens lay eggs, babies grow up, and when night falls everybody heads home.
Pixel Petri has no goals, no scores and no timers. It is a toy you poke and watch. Poke a hen and she lays an egg. Poke a top hat and a rabbit hops out. Pick somebody up and drop them somewhere else, and people float down by parachute. Paint a patch of ground for a village and the people plant a flag, light a fire and start
Every creature makes its own choices, so no two worlds turn out the same, and more than two hundred small surprises wait for the moment two things meet. When one happens a sparkle often marks the spot, and a tap on it shows you what met what. A fireball turns sand into glass. Lightning makes the whole pond crackle. A crown turns a frog into somebody. A crow steals the crown right off somebody's head and flies up somewhere high with it. Whoever eats a mushroom is a giant for a while. Hand an ogre a teddy bear and it forgets how to fight. A UFO beams somebody up and drops them back down by parachute, and an alien borrows a cow for science.
In the tray: 43 people and animals, 28 creatures of the water, 35 monsters from goblins to dragons, 21 kinds of ground, 54 things to build and place from huts and bridges to castles and lanterns, 40 weapons (a pillow and a rubber chicken among them), 45 hats, shields and other things to wear or carry, and 21 powers, from rain and bloom to lightning, meteors, tornadoes and earthquakes.
Poke a creature and its card opens: what it is wearing and what happened to it lately. Give it a name and it becomes a friend. Pets safe keeps your named friends from harm, and a friend who is gone is remembered with a grave. The Scrapbook keeps your latest firsts, with a picture of each one that happened on screen, forty stickers to find and the friends you named, and any first can become a postcard you save. Undo takes back your last twenty moves, and a Snapshot keeps a moment you can go back to.
Your first world starts in Safe mode, where monsters leave people alone, and Gentle mode keeps hunger from hurting anyone. A creature that dies leaves a little pile of bones that fades away. There is never any blood.
Four world sizes, from 48 by 64 tiles up to 192 by 192, and three lengths of day. Your worlds save on your phone as you play, and you can save one to a file and open it again later.
Eight original songs play in the music player: three to start, five more that unlock as you play, and a switch beside each one so you choose what stays in the loop.
