Q: There are parts in the New Testament marked as (None). Why are there such parts? If you look up Matthew 17:21, the text is missing where it should be; instead, it is enclosed in parentheses with the words "Verse 21 missing." There is also an instruction to refer to Marginal Note 1. Following that instruction and looking at Marginal Note 1, it states, "In some manuscripts, verse 21 [This kind can only be driven out by prayer and fasting] is found." This was added by later manuscripts, taken from Mark 9:29.

Like Matthew 18:11, the text is also missing, and the marginal note states, "In some manuscripts, verse 11 [The Son of Man came to save the lost] is found." This was added by later manuscripts, taken from Luke 19:10.

The parts marked "-Verse missing" are text that is not found in ancient manuscripts. These are texts that are not found in papyrus manuscripts from around the 3rd century or in the capital letters of the 4th and 5th centuries. They are texts that appear only in minuscule manuscripts from around the 11th century.

Because verses were classified and assigned unique numbers based on 11th-century manuscripts, for passages not found in earlier ancient manuscripts, only the verse was omitted while the verse number was retained; this is why the notation "-verse missing" appears. The 11th-century manuscripts are enlarged versions. The enlarged content did not come from elsewhere but from relevant passages in the Bible. Therefore, if you look at the text added to the marginal notes marked "-verse missing," you can easily see that it is by no means an unfamiliar text.
