About this app

This App, which was created by the Underground Association of Rome with the contribution of the Lazio Region as part of the Call for the Enhancement of Historical Memory, will guide you with an interactive map among the Roman streets and squares to make you discover - with a sort of compelling "treasure hunt" - the WWII anti-aircraft sirens that still stand on the highest roofs of the city and the path of the "catenary" cable that connected them all to the network.

Thanks to the in-depth information sheets, you will then be able to discover the history, technique and curiosity of the alarm systems of the capital of Italy, which was built between the 1930s and 1940s and remained in operation - unique at national level - until 1975. It was made up of 54 sirens, 2 signalers and 2 command centers (the main one in the basement of the Palazzo Viminale seat of the Ministry of the Interior and the secondary one in the shelter of Palazzo Valentini seat of the Prefecture).

Most of the sirens were electromagnetic with a 500 watt acoustic emitter, only 8 systems had three of 500 (for a total of 1,500 acoustic watts each) and finally there were 9 electromechanical sirens. Of the original war sirens currently only 26 remain (3 of which have been relocated).

Since 2012 as the Underground Association of Rome we have begun to study sirens (which are still owned by the Ministry of the Interior): we have documented them and we are strongly asking the national and local Institutions and Superintendencies to now fully consider them true and its own cultural assets, promoting their proper safeguarding, maintenance and recovery as rare and precious "Sentinels of Memory".
