Spelldown is a word game set at an old-fashioned county spelling bee in rural Ohio. Folding chairs on a maple gym floor, a 4-H banner over the stage, and a pronouncer at the microphone reading your word. Miss a letter and you sit down. The last speller standing moves on.
You hear the word and see it as a dictionary respelling, never the letters. Type it on a typewriter keyboard against the clock. You can ask for the definition, the language of origin or a sentence, but each one costs seconds. Letters are final once struck, so think before you tap. A few strips of correction tape will take one back. The rivals beside you have habits: Delia from Ashtabula always asks for the origin, and the Kowalski twins fidget and drop double letters. Win the school bee to go on to the county fair, then the Ohio Statehouse, then the national finals.
Every word you meet goes into your word notebook with its etymology, a sentence and your past attempts. Missed words land on a drill pile for short practice sessions, and ribbons go up on your wall.

• Word notebook with filters by status and language, plus a live dictionary panel showing pronunciation, syllables, rarity and sound-alike words
• Five-word practice drills built from your misses, with a daily streak
• Ribbon wall with your speller badge photo from the camera or photo album
