With the Twolined Spittlebug app users can learn about and correctly identify Twolined Spittlebugs, and invasive and destructive pasture pest in Hawaii. Users can also assist the University of Hawaii-Manoa Twolined Spittlebug research team, as citizen scientists by using the apps reporting tool to geolocate sightings of the pest. Finally, landowners can use the app to locate, map, and manage Twolined spittlebug outbreaks on their lands.
The Twolined Spittlebug app contains these features:
- Information portal – learn about Twolined Spittlebug in Hawaii.
- Identification Tool – learn how to distinguish Twolined Spittlebug from other spittlebug species in Hawaii.
- Report Tool – Assist UH-Manoa researchers in tracking the Twolined Spittlebug outbreak by taking pictures of the pest that are georeferenced and downloaded to a master Twolined Spittlebug Map.
- Management Tool – Have Twolined Spittlebug on your ranch? Use the management tool to document the size and damage of the outbreak and determine suitable Integrated Pest Management priorities.
The Twolined Spittlebug app is free and easy to use. In addition to ranchers and landowners who can benefit from the management tool in the app, we encourage everyone with concern for the conservation of Hawaii’s rangelands and natural areas to download and use it to learn about, correctly identify, and report Twolined Spittlebug sightings. This will help UH-Manoa researchers track and monitor outbreaks of the pest, and refine integrated pest management strategies.
