With the goal of advancing academic research in Korean studies and spreading the Korean Wave globally, the Comprehensive Database of Korean Studies has established five core content areas: the Collection of Korean Literary Works, the Geographical and Customs of Korea, the History of Goryeo in Hangul, the History of Korea-Japan Relations, and the Geographical and Customs of Manchuria and Mongolia. In addition, a system has been established to link supplementary services such as the Collection of Korean Literary Works, translated classics, and Korean studies research papers. Furthermore, to enable the general public to easily access Korean studies, geographical content and "Our History of Goryeo in Comics" have been added.
Notably, starting in 2025, the MKS eBook system has been established to digitize academic books on Korean studies, including the Gyeongin Series, thereby expanding the research foundation and facilitating global expansion. Major Databases of the Comprehensive Database of Korean Studies
• Database of Historical Korean Literary Collections
• Database of Korean Geography and Customs
• History of Goryeo in Hangul Database
• Database of History of Korea-Japan Relations
• Database of Manchuria and Mongolia Geography and Customs
• Database of Korean Studies Research Paper Contents
■ Database of Historical Korean Literary Collections
The Database of Historical Korean Literary Collections is a digital database containing approximately 4,400 types of literary collections by about 4,000 figures spanning from the Unified Silla period to the modern era. It holds immense academic value as it includes not only widely known collections such as Yi Gyu-bo’s *Dongguk Isangukjip* and Jeong Mong-ju’s *Poeunjip*, but also numerous valuable collections that have not previously been made public.
By encompassing the literary collections of not only Confucian scholars but also Buddhist Zen monks, it covers the entirety of Korean thought, including Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Furthermore, containing records from diverse fields such as history, literature, art, diplomacy, and miscellaneous studies, it can be considered a treasure trove of Korean cultural content. Accessibility was significantly improved through a webpage redesign in 2022, and a foundation for popularization was laid with the provision of services linking to Korean translations from the Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics. Additionally, mobile services are available, allowing for convenient use anytime and anywhere.
■ Database of Korean Geography and Customs
The Database of Korean Geography and Customs is a database constructed based on the results of a survey conducted by Imperial Japan in 1910 regarding the overall state of Joseon society for the purpose of colonial rule. It includes data collected by the Government-General of Korea and various social organizations on diverse fields such as history, urban development, climate, cultural heritage, and the origins of place names.
Although it has limitations due to being viewed from the perspective of the Japanese rulers, it contains encyclopedic materials encompassing geography, customs, language, and folklore, such as *Joseonjiji* (Geography of Joseon), *Seommanbaldalsa* (History of the Development of Joseon and Manchuria), *Fengshui Jili* (Geography of Customs and Landscapes), *Joseonpungtogi* (Records of the Customs and Land of Joseon), and *Daehan Gyeongyeokgo* (Study of the Territory of Korea). In particular, it records in detail the origins and developmental histories of major cities such as Gyeongseong (Seoul), Pyongyang, Busan, Daegu, Mokpo, Gyeongju, Kaesong, and Sinuiju. Furthermore, by including materials from both North and South Korea, such as the *Bukhan Annae* and *Bukjoseonji*, it is an essential resource for research on the North Korean region during the early modern and contemporary periods.
■ Hangeul Goryeosa DB
The Hangeul Goryeosa DB is the only Korean-language translation of the History of Goryeo completed over six years by the Seokdang Institute of Science at Dong-A University. It comprises sections on royal genealogies, biographies, and treatises (including tables), presented in Hangeul translations, original texts, and original images.
As it vividly records the daily life of the entire Goryeo period, it is useful not only for historical research but also for understanding the characteristics of the era. It enhances understanding of the original text through rich annotations, indexes of names, places, and terms, and explanations in footnotes. Its integrated implementation in a database format has significantly improved usability.
Additionally, "Our History of Goryeo in Comics" has been created as supplementary content, allowing the general public to access the history of Goryeo in an easy and engaging way.
■ History of Korea-Japan Relations DB
The History of Korea-Japan Relations DB is a database that compiles materials related to Korea-Japan relations spanning approximately 2,000 years—from the Three Kingdoms period to the opening of Korea to foreign trade—by source and chronological order from sources such as the *Samguk Sagi*, *Samguk Yusa*, *Goryeosa*, *Goryeosa Jeolyo*, and *Joseon Wangjo Sillok*.
It is structured to allow for research by comparing Korean translations with original text images, and approximately 20,000 articles can be searched by era and source. Equipped with indexes for personal and place names, cross-referencing functions between original and translation texts, and convenience features for citing original texts, it is considered an essential resource for the study of Korea-Japan relations.
■ Geography and Customs of Manchuria and Mongolia DB
The Geography and Customs of Manchuria and Mongolia DB is a database built based on materials published by the Japanese Government-General of Korea during the Japanese colonial period, which surveyed the Manchuria and Mongolia regions about 100 years ago. It provides empirical records of births, funerals, trade, diplomacy, ethnicity, customs, traditions, folklore, folk songs, unusual stories, place names, miscellaneous notes, travelogues, and history of Manchuria and Mongolia, making it an important resource for comparative research on the conditions of that time with the present.
In particular, through records such as the unfamiliar ‘Jonghoenggi,’ this content allows you to rediscover the cultural zones and border customs of the two regions.
■ Korean Studies Research Paper Content DB
The Korean Studies Research Paper Content DB provides full-text versions of approximately 20,000 prior academic research papers related to the various contents included in the Comprehensive Korean Studies DB, linked with materials from domestic public institutions. It is of great assistance to professors and researchers as it contains a wide range of research materials, including diverse topics such as history, literature, art, diplomacy, and miscellaneous knowledge recorded in literary collections from ancient Korea (Silla) to the modern era, as well as historical records related to Korea-Japan relations and the history, geography, and customs of Joseon, Manchuria, and Mongolia during the Japanese colonial period.
It is also expected to contribute significantly to the future development of Korean studies research by allowing students easy access to classical studies.
■ MKS eBook
MKS eBook is a platform that digitizes various academic books related to Korean studies, including the Gyeongin Korean Studies Series by Gyeongin Cultural Publishing. It was established to enable professors and students researching Korean studies, as well as the general public, to understand the subject more easily. Furthermore, it is operated with the purpose of contributing to the dissemination of Korean studies research and the promotion of the Korean Wave in the world.
