About this app

Step back into 19th century New South Wales with a self-guided walking tour through Burrawang, one of the best-preserved historic villages in the Southern Highlands.
Sitting high on a hill 760 metres above sea level, Burrawang was named after the native Burrawang palm and first appears on the map in 1865, when its post office opened under the name Mount Pleasant before being renamed the same year. What grew from there has barely changed: a timber town of weatherboard cottages, wide verandahs and a main street — Hoddle Street, named for surveyor Robert Hoddle — lined with buildings that have stood for well over a century.
This app guides you on foot through the village, bringing each site to life with stories, historical photos and background you won't find on a plaque. Highlights along the route include:

The Burrawang General Store, trading in various guises since 1867
The School of Arts, one of the village's few brick and stone buildings, still an active community hall today
St Peter's Catholic Church (1875), St David's Anglican Church (1886) and the former Presbyterian Church (1888)
The Burrawang Village Hotel, with its outstanding beer garden and sweeping valley views
The rolling green hills and heritage streetscape that have earned Burrawang comparisons to an English village transplanted into the Australian bush

Whether you're visiting for the day, staying nearby in the Southern Highlands, or you're a local wanting to know more about the place you live, this tour is self-paced — walk at your own speed, stop where you like, and dip in and out as you go. No booking required.
The tour is presented by the Burrawang and Wildes Meadow Community Association, a volunteer group dedicated to protecting the character and heritage of the village for residents and visitors alike.
