"Vignettes" is a program whose main objective is to compile images from mestizo sources and offer a description, analysis, and identification of the elements of traditional pictographic writing present in each of them. It also provides direct access to the parallel images of TLACHIA and the TEMOA texts from which they were extracted. This approach highlights the mestizo character of the vignettes, which function as texts for those who created them and as illustrations for those who commissioned them.
The aim is to facilitate access to these images and consistently link them to traditional codices. In particular, it aims to demonstrate that these vignettes are heirs to a rich and long pictographic tradition.
"Vignettes" includes the 1,824 vignettes of the Florentine Codex, the 120 of the Durán Codex, the 52 of the Tovar Codex, the vignettes of the First Memorials, divided between the Matritense Codex of the Royal Palace (146) and the Matritense Codex of the Royal Academy (122), the 92 vignettes of the Cruz-Badiano Codex as well as the 765 images of Francisco Hernández. That is, a total of 3,115 images that have a close relationship with the Nahuatl language.
