TextTimeline copies the SMS and MMS messages on your phone into a backup file on your phone. Free, with no limit on how many messages it backs up.

WHAT YOU GET
• A standard XML message backup, saved to Downloads or to a folder you pick. It is the common backup format, so a restore tool can read your messages back onto a phone.
• A record saved beside it: checksums, counts, and exactly what was and was not included.
• Both files stay on your phone. Nothing is uploaded unless you upload it yourself.

BACK UP EVERYTHING, OR JUST WHAT YOU NEED
Pick a date range, pick conversations, or both. Conversations are listed by phone number, because the app cannot see your contacts. A filtered backup says on its face that it is not your whole message history.

WHAT IT CANNOT DO
SMS and MMS only. RCS chats (the newer mode in Google Messages, often shown blue) are stored separately by Android and cannot be backed up by any backup app. Check your file against Messages before you rely on it.

PRIVACY
No internet permission at all, so the app cannot send your messages anywhere. No ads, no analytics, no crash reporting. It reads your messages only to build your backup file. The app lists its 20 most recent exports so the phone's owner can see what has been taken, and Android shows the app running for the whole time a backup runs.
