About this app

DJ Bach — Create, Evolve, and Adapt Music

DJ Bach is an adaptive music engine and creative instrument for Android. It lets you shape music in real time, generating endless, musically meaningful variations that respond to emotion, interaction, and external signals.

At its core is the Tonamic method: a rule-free, physics-inspired approach to composition. DJ Bach does not replay loops, remix samples, or rely on trained AI models. Music is generated live, on your device, every time you play.

The result is music that changes continuously yet remains coherent —
same feel, different notes, or deliberately reshaped expression when you choose.

Two Ways Music Evolves

DJ Bach supports structured variation, not randomness.

1. Variation with preserved feel
The system can traverse the same emotional trajectory (tension and surprise) repeatedly, producing different note sequences that retain a recognisable character. You hear infinite variations that feel related — not arbitrary.

2. Adaptive scaling of expression
You can actively reshape the entire expressive space in real time. By scaling tension, surprise, register, and tempo, the music itself changes its emotional range — becoming calmer, more intense, more sparse, or more urgent — while remaining musically grounded.

How You Control the Music

Touch & Gesture
Play DJ Bach like a smart instrument using the on-screen knob, 2D pad, and adaptive controls. You don’t trigger notes — you shape musical behaviour.

External Control & MIDI / DAW Integration
Connect DJ Bach to external sources such as DAWs or live data streams (UDP/OSC-style workflows). DJ Bach can act as a responsive music engine inside larger creative setups.

EEG Brainwave Music (Optional / Premium)
Connect a Muse EEG headband to let brain activity influence musical expression. EEG is an advanced control source — not required — useful for neurofeedback, experimentation, or hands-free interaction.

Visualisation as Feedback

Music is accompanied by real-time visualisations that reflect musical intensity, variability, and structure. These visual cues help you understand and steer the evolving sound.

What DJ Bach Is — and Isn’t

DJ Bach is not a playlist generator, a remix tool, or a meditation soundtrack app.
It’s a creative system for curious minds: composers, sound designers, experimenters, and anyone interested in how music can evolve without losing meaning.

You don’t press play.
You shape the music — and it responds.

I'm not a musician, but I've always been keen on music. This app helped me understand musical concepts in a fun and engaging way. However, I think its real strength lies in the 'Muse' module, which claims to create music from your thoughts. That feature is truly fascinating!

Thank you Maryam! EEG features relating to states of mind are indeed well-established in neuroscience. Our "Muse" module allows users to link these scientifically recognised features to matching musical elements. It's not about reading your thoughts, but translating your brain’s measurable states into music. We hope you’ll give it a try!

The eeg features are incomplete. It should show each wavelength and allow me to train which wavelength I should like. Alpha, beta, valence, energy? Is that gamma and theta? Meaningless. Why is there 2 axis? Is each one for a separate hemisphere? I would like to be able to select what wavelength does what in which sensor for what hemisphere. For example, when gamma in the left raised bpm increases, I don't want to count the right gamma. Or the reverse. Alpha, beta not relevant, Gamma, theta are.

Thank you—this feedback is extremely valuable. Tonamic evolves precisely because of detailed insights like yours. We're actively improving our system (with more EEG features) and tooltips (to clarify their meanings), supporting both intuitive and specialised users alike. The updated app now includes all EEG bands with plots and sound cues.
