First developed in the 12th Century, Urdu was used as the mode of language after the Muslim conquest. The original forms of work by which Urdu was communicated were folk songs, riddles and couplets. The traditional way. However, Urdu wasn’t always known as Urdu. It was commonly referred to as Hindvi and Hindi. Evidence even suggests that during some period of time during the late 17th century, it was referred to as Hindustani. However, the distinction between Urdu and Hindi is quite big. Despite being part of the same phonetic and grammatical family, the lexicon in which they are written is contrasting. Hindi derives its lexicon from Sanskrit, whereas Urdu is a mix of Arabic and Persian. The deep-rooted history of Urdu and its journey through time is of great mystery and appreciation to us. As a result, we built Urdu Gah, the world’s largest personal collection of Urdu works on the internet. We want people to appreciate the Urdu language in what we see as the purest form, written works. These works span a long period of time and reflect the ideas in the society they lived in. Now with the ability of technology, we are on a mission to educate and sustain the Urdu language and all the works within it.
