About this app

WordsToSign is a mobile platform for learning and sharing sign language through real human interaction. It combines a sign-language request marketplace, interpreter workflows, live session booking, social messaging, public learning content, progress tracking, and admin moderation into one React Native app.

At its core, a learner can create a request for a word, sentence, or short “other” expression they want translated into sign language. The request includes language selection and context. Interpreters can browse open requests, claim them, upload video translations, and complete the work. Learners then receive the finished sign-language video in their messages, can watch it, mark it as seen, and review or give feedback on the response.

The app is role-based. Regular users focus on requesting signs, watching translations, learning from the public feed, booking live sessions, chatting, and tracking progress. Interpreters get extra request-management tools, live availability controls, booking visibility, review workflows, and wallet/withdrawal features. Admin users have moderation and support tools, including user management, reports, quizzes, support messages, spam handling, notifications, and IBAN request review.

WordsToSign also includes a live interpretation feature. Users can choose an interpreter, select a duration, pick an available time slot, choose a meeting type such as Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, or physical meeting, and pay for the session. Interpreters can create their availability and see their live meetings. The app also supports PayPal-based checkout and automatic payment verification on return to the app.

Beyond the translation marketplace, WordsToSign has a community layer. Users can add friends, follow or block people, open public profiles, use one-to-one chat and group chat, send media, audio, files, stickers, GIFs, locations, contacts, reactions, replies, pinned messages, chat backgrounds, and start audio/video calls. A public feed shows completed sign-language videos so users can discover signs from the wider community.

The learning side includes an informational “About sign language” area, quizzes, progress dashboards, XP, levels, streaks, badges, quiz accuracy, and category progress for words, sentences, and other request types. This gives users a sense of growth rather than treating the app as a one-off translation tool.

The profile and account layer includes avatars, dark mode, notification handling, account details, wallet summaries, PayPal or IBAN withdrawal verification for eligible users, app rating prompts, password/email management, and support/feedback flows.

Technically, WordsToSign is a React Native mobile app backed by a Spring Boot API. It uses JWT authentication, cached data for faster screens, push notifications, Firebase messaging, local MMKV storage, WebRTC/call support, video playback, media upload, PayPal purchase flows, and a backend API covering users, learning requests, translations, responses, live sessions, purchases, friends, chats, groups, quizzes, support, reports, and admin functions.

In one sentence: WordsToSign is a sign-language learning and interpretation app where users can request real signed video translations, book live interpreter sessions, learn from public content, communicate with the community, and track their progress over time.
