Fluence. reads your PDFs aloud, offline. It turns the documents you already have into something you can listen to, read along with, and ask questions of, without any of it leaving your phone.
The voice comes with the app. There is no pack to choose and nothing to download before you can listen: a natural voice, in thirty-one languages, is on the phone the moment Fluence. is.
Bring in a PDF, an EPUB, a Word document (.docx or .doc), an OpenDocument (.odt), Rich Text (.rtf), a Markdown file (.md), a plain text file or a web article. Fluence. prepares it on the device: it works out the structure, narrates it in a voice you choose, and keeps the text in step with the audio so you can follow along or take over reading at any point. A PDF is put back together before it is read: running heads, page numbers and footnotes are kept out of the reading, and a sentence carries on across the page turn.
READ
The text as it was written, with the sentence being spoken highlighted as you listen. In the player, the word being said is marked as you hear it. A table of contents takes you to any chapter, or to an article of a regulation. Timestamps down the margin, so you always know where you are. Bookmark a line, or write a note against it.
LISTEN
Neural voices that run on the phone itself. Choose the one that suits you and your hardware: a light one that starts instantly, a fuller one that sounds closer to someone reading to you, or your own voice, cloned from a short recording you make yourself. The narration pauses where a reader would: between sentences, longer between paragraphs, longer again around a heading.
ASK
Ask a question about what you are reading and get an answer drawn from the document itself, with the passages it was built from shown underneath.
It works by finding the passages that bear on your question and handing those to a language model running on the phone. So it reads a selection of the document rather than all of it: a model that fits on a phone holds a few thousand words at a time, not a hundred thousand. It answers questions about the text well, while summarising a long book from end to end is beyond it. Every answer says how many passages it read, and says so plainly when nothing matched your question and it sampled across the whole document instead.
NOTHING LEAVES THE PHONE
There is no account and no server of ours. Your documents, your questions, your notes and your recorded voice are read and processed on the device, and none of it is ever uploaded. The voices and models are downloaded once and then run offline.
Fluence. is built for people who read carefully and would rather not hand their reading to somebody else's building.
A natural voice, included. PDF, EPUB, Word and Markdown read aloud offline.
