Curbside chains, sirens howling, low-flying aircraft ... Sounds like these show how the Cold War has shaped everyday life in the tranquil Münsterland. Listen to the entrance gate of a former munitions bunker when it is closed and listen to a mysterious radio station that only agents could decipher!
Put all these sounds together in your own combination and play one after the other or at the same time, such as the sounds of military contexts, such as maneuvers. Or only the cultural echo that the Cold War found in movies, songs and also in the radio coverage. Or combine it so contradictorily, as the whole conflict affected the participants: overlapping each other and confusing.
The project "Foreign neighbor - Life in the Cold War in Münsterland" aims to raise awareness of the economic, ecological and socio-cultural heritage of the Cold War era. In addition to the visit and mapping of places of the Cold War in the Münsterland - inaccessible, mysterious, partly forgotten, partly used today quite differently, is also worth the search for sounds of the Cold War.
The confrontation with the sounds of the Cold War should remind of this era and arouse interest in historical regional features. The project is funded by the Regional Cultural Policy (RKP) of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and is part of the "Expedition Münsterland" of the Research Transfer Office (AFO) at the WWU Münster.
The Münsterland Expedition makes science locations in the Münsterland come alive and makes university research in the region visible. The project sees itself as a bridge between science and society. Starting points for many events are references from citizens who are interested in their surroundings and who then often play a decisive role in the implementation of the joint research events - in terms of content and organization.
