date-a-book is a small experiment by Otherland, Berlin's bookshop for science fiction, fantasy and horror: meet people who share your taste in books - not through photos, age or swiping.
YOUR READING LIFE AS ONE WHEEL
What you want to read lies on your pile, what you have read stands on your shelf, and the books you are reading now sit in the middle. Turn the wheel through all of it; tap a book to turn it round: its note, who else is reading it, and what to do with it next.
YOUR FIVE
Five books that say something about you, framed in gold. When all five are taken, a new one swaps with the one you choose.
A PILE THAT KNOWS YOUR PACE
Your pile shows roughly when each book's turn comes. After two months a book asks: keep it, read it now, already read, or off the pile?
OTHER PEOPLE'S WHEELS
Every member's books turn around them, too. See which books you share, and take one from their shelf onto your pile.
TALK ABOUT THE BOOK, NOT ABOUT YOURSELF
Every book has its own room, and everyone in it has read or is reading the same thing. Once you share two or more books with someone, you can message each other directly.
WHAT ELSE
• Add books you read long ago, to keep track of your reading
• Bring your reading life from Goodreads or StoryGraph: export it there, upload it here, choose what comes along
• Share your five as a card with friends
• Invite friends with your personal link or QR code
• Optional e-mail digests when someone new shelves one of your books
This is an early version: things will change, and your feedback shapes it. Book data comes from Open Library and ISBNdb. Shelves and chats are visible to members only; there are no ads and no tracking.
date-a-book is a project by relevantive GmbH and Otherland (otherland-berlin.de). Also on the web: https://date-a-book.net
