About this app

The PrioBike app gives you - as a cyclist in Hamburg - the opportunity to receive traffic light information while driving. You can use these to adjust your driving behavior. For example, you can let yourself coast if you know that the traffic light will stay red anyway or accelerate so that you can reach the next green phase.

background
The app is being developed as part of the PrioBike project at TU Dresden to research this new type of cycling in harmony with traffic lights. Accordingly, the app is currently being actively developed and continually improved. We are pleased that the app is now freely available to download and thank everyone who takes the time to try out the app. Please let us know your experiences via email “priobike@tu-dresden.de”.

How do I use the app?
First, create routes in the app for your favorite routes. The app automatically finds traffic lights along these routes. So that you get as much out of the app as possible, the app gives you information about the current traffic light coverage when creating routes. When you start your journey, you will see that colors appear in the speedometer as you approach traffic lights. These correspond to the traffic light colors. In the middle of the speedometer you can see the current color of the traffic light as well as a countdown until the next change in traffic light color. On the edge of the speedometer you can see your speed and the color the traffic light will be when you arrive if you continue driving at that speed. This way you can see whether you will arrive at red or green and can individually adjust your driving behavior accordingly.

How does the app work?
So that the app can provide you with information about the best speed along your route, it uses traffic light data. These are made freely available by the city of Hamburg as open data. The app uses this traffic light data to automatically assign the correct traffic lights to your route and to derive future switching states for these traffic lights.
For this purpose, Hamburg has set up a system that records and provides traffic light data at the traffic lights. Currently, around 5,100 traffic lights are already connected to the system and the system is being expanded continuously. So you can assume that data will be available for even more traffic lights in the future.
You can find out directly in the app how many traffic lights in the city and on your route can already provide data.
