BikeBox - Traffic Data for Better Cycling Infrastructure in Würzburg
The BikeBox app is part of a research project at the Technical University of Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS). The goal of the project is to record and sustainably improve the quality, safety, and comfort of cycling in Würzburg.
During the ride, the app uses sensors and location data to record a variety of measurements to gain a comprehensive picture of the traffic situation for cyclists. These include:
Distances to obstacles on the left and right
Dust and particulate matter concentrations in the surrounding area
Acceleration and gyroscope data for analyzing riding behavior and road conditions
Temperature and humidity
The app uses the current location to assign the measurements to a specific route. This makes it possible to understand where certain events occur – such as close overtaking maneuvers, strong vibrations, or poor air quality.
Data protection is our top priority:
All users have pseudonymized user accounts, and to protect privacy, the first and last 100 meters of each ride are automatically truncated to prevent conclusions about the user's place of residence or work. The data collected is used exclusively for scientific purposes.
With your support, you help us to specifically improve the cycling infrastructure in Würzburg and make cycling safer and more attractive.
