Papote is a feed of short French videos made for French people rather than for learners. Vlogs, street interviews, cooking, stand-up, football arguments.
WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT
A clip plays and two lines of captions run under it, French on top and English below. The word being said lights up as it goes past, which is how you find out where one word ended and the next one started. You pick a level before the first clip and the feed is built from clips at that level.
OUAIS, NOT OUI
French people do not talk the way the textbook does. Oui becomes ouais, tu as becomes t'as, je ne sais pas turns into chais pas. The Parlé tab collects those pairs from the clips in the catalog and puts the spoken form next to the written one, each with a few seconds of someone saying it.
THE WORD YOU MISSED
Tap it and you get the sense it carries in that line, plus the dictionary form it came from. Save it and the clip is saved with it. For the sentences where liaison welds every word to the next one there is a 0.75x and a 0.5x, and the captions stay in time at both.
WHAT YOU KEEP
Saved words come back as cards on the day you were about to lose them, and each card plays back the few seconds of clip you took the word from. There is no streak to protect and nothing to lose by leaving the app alone for a week.
WHO IT IS FOR
People who can read a menu and still lose the thread when two French people talk to each other. If short video already has an hour of your day, this is that hour with the captions switched on.
The clips belong to the people who made them. Every video plays in the official YouTube player, carries the name of its channel, and links back to the original.
