Their leader is the feared Dodo from Inn- and Knyphausen, who calls himself “Lord of the Emsland” and resides in the magnificent Paulsburg. The occupation harasses the city's residents and suppresses the Catholic faith. It is the brothers of the Jesuit order who are particularly a thorn in the side of the Protestant Swedes...

The citizens of Meppen suffer under the heavy hand of the occupiers: violence, hunger and suffering are omnipresent. An oppressive atmosphere hangs over the city. Many find themselves in need because what little they have goes to the soldiers who have been forcibly billeted. But in the midst of these dark times, there is also hope – and resistance. While most people try to come to terms with the situation or even benefit from it, a few brave ones dare to rebel against the oppressors.

Meppen is not only characterized by the terror of the occupiers, but also by busy activity: the fortress is being expanded and strengthened. Walls, bridges and gates are built and the city is surrounded with an impregnable ring of fortifications. It seems almost impossible to overcome the strong walls and moats.
