About this app

The Purullena Guide is very useful for getting to know this unique town. With it you can move through its streets between “hills” inhabited by countless caves. You will also be able to locate each bar, restaurant, accommodation, and discover the main tourist attractions and their festivals. It even invites you to discover incredible trails between bad-lands and its fertile plain.

Purullena is located in the central-western part of the Guadix Region, in the Province of Granada and Autonomous Community of Andalusia. The Purullenense City Council is made up of the towns of Purullena and El Bejarín. Its municipal area is crossed by the Alhama and Fardes rivers.

One of the main characteristics of Purullena is its privileged location within the Intrabético groove, since it is an essential communication path between Western Andalusia and the Levant, and between the easternmost part of Andalusia and the North. Due to this location, one of the most important infrastructures in Andalusia, the A-92 Highway, runs through its municipal area, with the municipality having access to it.

Purullena stands out for its large number of cave houses and for being an eminently agricultural and artisanal town. It is famous for its ceramics decorated with cobalt blue with the polychrome reflection technique, whose tradition dates back to the 16th century and whose pieces are exhibited and sold in cave shops. “An amazing town”, in the words of the historian Carlos Asenjo Sedano, “that remains 'hanging' from the clay of the gullies that are offered in an infinite number of disconcerting penguins” and in whose underground dwellings legend says that the famous bandit José took refuge. María 'El Tempranillo'.

The municipality has one of the most important deposits in the province. In the area of Cuesta del Negro, a fortified enclosure of the Argaric culture was discovered dating back to 1,800 BC. In its necropolis, almost fifty tombs were excavated, all of them with varied and rich grave goods. Many of these archaeological remains are currently exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Granada.

Agriculture is the main source of income, as it has a very fertile plain where extensive groves and peach trees are located.

Purullena offers visitors a multitude of possibilities to enjoy an unforgettable visit.
