About this app

Due to a cyberattack that unfortunately affected the National Museum of Natural History, the INPN Species mobile app and the Détermin'Obs website are unavailable indefinitely. The Museum's teams are doing their best to resolve the situation; we will keep you informed. Thank you for your understanding.

The INPN Species mobile app allows you to discover the diversity of species present around you from your mobile phone and share your observations with experts. Whether you're curious about nature, passionate about nature, or a student, take part in the biodiversity inventory of your community, whether you're in mainland France or overseas!

Sharing your observation couldn't be simpler; just a few clicks on your phone:
- Take one to three photos of the species you want to identify (wild species, clear photo, visible determining criteria, etc.) or search for your photos in your gallery;
- Inform the experts of the date and location of the observation using the "geolocate" function or by manually entering the name of your municipality;
- Specify the species' basic group (mammal, insect, plant, etc.).

If you wish to delve deeper into the identification, you can try indicating the taxonomic group (butterflies, salamanders and newts, flowering plants, etc.). Species identification assistance is also provided with an illustrated list of species that may match your description.

You will be informed of the progress regarding the validation of your observations and will allow the experts to complete the species distribution maps. Become an observer of your municipality's biodiversity and a knowledge contributor!

Teachers can also inventory biodiversity with their students by creating class accounts (from primary to 12th grade) and then selecting student observations before submitting them to the experts. Educational activities can be found on the Détermin’Obs website to support the classroom, based on grade levels and curricula.
Finally, quests are offered to answer a scientific question about a specific group or species. The data collected will allow experts to better understand the ecology, distribution, or life cycle of the targeted species.

Depending on the season, new quests will be regularly offered. Some will take place over several months, while others will be offered for shorter periods. Similarly, some will target mainland France, others overseas, some will be national, and others much more local.
